Summary Position
The Assistant Director of Learning Design and Support serves as a member of the leadership team within Teaching and Learning Technologies (TLT). This team designs, advances, and supports the use of instructional technology across a broad range of academic and administrative programs and initiatives, including the management and advancement of the Learning Management System (LMS) ecosystem and tools; the development and production of modules, videos, graphics, and creative elements; and contributions to the faculty, staff, and student experience (professional development and skill building around instructional technologies, the use of Microsoft Office 365, and other technology tools). This position provides leadership, management, support, and guidance to the team, empowering them to successfully carry out their mission and continually improving the digital experience at Elon. Teaching and Learning Technologies is a part of the larger Information Technology organization.

    • A minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience, including a combination of hands-on instructional/learning design work, module development, production work (video, graphics, and creative elements), and project management. Experience designing and delivering solutions to support active and engaged learning, both synchronous and asynchronous.
    • Evidence of successful and progressively responsible roles in information technology or related area (including growth in levels of responsibility, the complexity of work, numbers and sophistication of employees) as associated with the essential duties is desired.

    • Excellent organizational and time-management skills; demonstrated ability to anticipate problems, regularly exercise independent judgment, respond quickly and appropriately to issues and opportunities as they arise.

    General Purpose of Position

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities
    1. Lead the Learning Design and Support Team. (40% of time)
    • Supervise a team of approximately 6 staff positions (instructional technologists, designer/developer, video producer) and 20 student staff. Provide leadership and guidance in the daily operations, mission, and vision of the team.
    • Promote a culture of continual growth and professional development. Help staff achieve their career goals including assigning work which leverages their skills and capabilities and provides them with opportunities for learning. Evaluate staff performance.
    • Facilitate strong communication and information sharing. Lead staff in the understanding of university, division, and departmental priorities and objectives.
    • Empower the team and pave the way for successful work through strategic partnerships, addressing challenges, and reducing barriers.
    • Manage a budget, effectively use existing resources, and advocate for additional resources to ensure delivery and advancement of services.
    • Establish sustainable IT support models for new service offerings.
    • Develop and maintain a sense of confidence and trust in technology support internal to the department and external throughout the university community.



    2. Advance instructional technologies, productivity tools, and creative elements. (25% of time)
    • Provide leadership and expertise to support and advance the use of instructional technology, productivity tools, and creative elements across a broad range of academic and administrative programs and initiatives that align with university mission, strategic priorities, and initiatives.
    • Design, develop, implement, and assess professional development opportunities that focus on the effective use of technology to support faculty across career stages and professional ranks and the advancement of engaged and experiential teaching and learning. Assist with staff development efforts related to the effective use of technology in partnership with the Office of Leadership and Professional Development.
    • Utilize technology to support campus-wide rollouts or changes where appropriate, including the use of creative elements and modules to provide information and ensure effective understanding.
    • Provide oversight to the selection, procurement, development, delivery, evaluation, and assessment of new technologies that align with the mission and vision of the university.
    • Provide reporting to showcase the teams work, identify areas for improvement, and change service offerings.
    • Provide leadership and guidance in online course development, including Elons Summer Online sessions and Continuing Education/Elon Next.
    • Champion and advocate for the user experience, digital accessibility, and effective learning design.
    • Stay current with trends and new developments related to the teams mission.

    3. Facilitate TLT cross-team collaboration and project management. (20% of time)
    • Serve as an active team member of the TLT Leadership Team and the IT Leadership Team.
    • Collaborate with other TLT Leaders and staff to ensure strong communication, transparency, information sharing, effective teamwork and synergy between staff, and the successful utilization of skill sets across the department to serve our mission and vision.
    • Facilitate TLT staff meetings, rotating responsibilities with other leaders.
    • Be an active and contributing member of the IT Leadership Team, participating in Associate/Assistant Director meetings to represent TLT and advance ITs work.
    • Build strong relationships throughout the IT organization to develop and maintain a sense of confidence and trust in technology support internal to the department and external throughout the university community.
    • Periodically serve as a project manager and project sponsor for technology roll-outs.

    4. Create, foster, and facilitate key relationships and partnerships across campus to identify needs and strategize, develop, and implement solutions. (15% of time)
    • Key partnerships include the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning, academic department chairs, the Registrars Office, Continuing Education and Elon Next, Human Resources, the Office of Leadership and Professional Development, the Student Professional Development Center, and University Communications.
    • Facilitate cross-departmental collaboration (within IT and throughout the university) to implement technology solutions to serve the mission and support university initiatives.
    • Build and sustain vendor relationships, including with the LMS provider, LinkedIn Learning, Microsoft, contract services providers, and others.
