Instructional Designer
General Summary/Purpose
The Office of Medical Student Curriculum (OMSC) delivers the highest quality four-year Doctor of Medicine curriculum for the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. In support of the OMSC's mission, the Instructional Designer advises and assists faculty, teaching assistants, and others in the identification, operationalization, and effective use of innovative teaching and assessment strategies and, where appropriate, instructional technologies. The Instructional Designer leads or serves as a contributing member of project teams that develop new curriculum and/or educational technology resources, and serves on academic and technical committees to contribute to the expansion of the institution's knowledge base for educational best practices, educational research, and instructional technology enhancement objectives.
The Instructional Designer manages the curriculum database, leads and manages the development and deployment of student assessments and course evaluations, and is a key member of the Continuous Quality Improvement team. This is a fast-paced, deadline-driven, hands-on position that requires a high degree of flexibility and adaptability, and the ability to respond to competing and changing priorities with a positive attitude.
The Instructional Designer reports to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education (UME), and is an integral part of the OMSC and the broader educational community. The position works closely with all members of the OMSC, the Office of Assessment and Evaluation, the Office of Information Technology, and the Office of Online, educational leaders (deans, directors, vice provosts, faculty, etc.), educators, and staff across the Johns Hopkins University, as well as medical students.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Assessment and Program Evaluation
Manage and implement instructional technologies (e.g., ExamSoft, Blackboard, Qualtrics, etc.) to support the curriculum, assessments, and course evaluations, primarily (but not exclusively) for Years 1 and 2, and for continual quality improvement. Examples include:
Curriculum Inventory (CI)
Instructional and Scholarly Support
o. course syllabus development
o. effective lecture delivery techniques
o. active learning strategies
o. student feedback during and outside of class
o. student assignments (individual and collaborative)
o. classroom discussion
o. use of digital video and audio to enhance instruction
o. facilitating online discussion and collaboration
o. learner assessment and course evaluation
Other
Minimum Qualifications (Required)
Bachelor's degree in instructional design, instructional technology, education, or related field
Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in course design and development, faculty training, or program/course assessment/evaluation required.
Advanced degree may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience..For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in Educational Psychology or a related field and at least five (5) years related experience strongly preferred.
Experience in medical education preferred.
Knowledge of or experience with the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accreditation standards, Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs), and/or the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Competencies and Milestones preferred
Experience or mastery in working with Oasis, Blackboard, Campus Labs, Examsoft, and Qualtrics preferred.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.
The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
