2021-22 COLLEGE Fellowship to Diversify Teaching and Learning

Stanford University

Job Number:
81824

The Stanford Introductory Studies Fellowship to Diversify Teaching and Learning

Stanford Introductory Studies (SIS) at Stanford University is now accepting applications for teaching fellowship positions in the new first-year requirement, the Civic, Liberal, and Global Education requirement program (the COLLEGE requirement), a program that honors the educational tradition established at Stanford in 1923. Courses are frequently interdisciplinary and represent a range of fields within the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. We are especially interested in candidates whose backgrounds and life experiences bring additional perspectives and dimensions to the University's teaching mission.

Applicants should provide evidence of experience with and a commitment to teaching and mentoring a broadly diverse undergraduate student body. Other desired qualifications are intellectual flexibility; familiarity with team teaching, and demonstrated experience with developing students' skills in critical thinking, writing, discussion, and analysis. In the application process, all candidates must identify at least two COLLEGE courses that fit their teaching experience and training. We seek candidates from all fields in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and STEM. Eligible candidates will have earned a doctorate in a relevant field, conferred no earlier than 2015 and no later than June 2021. We intend to hire between 2 and 3 fellows.

Fellows will be placed on teaching teams with Stanford faculty and other fellows in three different courses, one each in autumn, winter and spring quarters. There are two types of course formats in the COLLEGE requirement: stand-alone seminars and lecture courses with sections. Depending on their placement, a fellow will either teach two seminars in the same subject (averaging 15 students each) or they will lead two discussion sections attached to a faculty-led lecture. Teaching in the COLLEGE fellowship is highly collaborative, with weekly teaching team meetings to plan sections and design assignments, and regular all-fellows pedagogy workshops. The fellowship also encourages a research community among fellows and offers programs and individual support for professional development. The appointment begins August 1, 2021 for a two-year term that is renewable for one additional year depending on programmatic need and job performance. Annual starting salary will be approximately $71,000 with a supplemental stipend of $2,000 for research and scholarship.

Applications will close February 16, 2021, and must be submitted through Interfolio. Offers of employment are made contingent upon the successful completion of a background check and ability to demonstrate eligibility to work in the US.

To apply for the 2021-22 COLLEGE Fellowship to Diversify Teaching and Learning:

Step One: Cluster Identification
Before you submit your application online, please identify one disciplinary cluster for which you would like to be considered (Humanities, Social Sciences, STEM). Cluster descriptions here: https://undergrad.stanford.edu/programs/thinking-matters/teach/open-fellowship/clusters

A full two-year fellowship position will require placement in three courses, one each in autumn, winter and spring. Because applications are evaluated in relation to the courses offered, we ask you to think carefully about which courses may be the best match for your background in scholarship and teaching.

Step Two: Gather Application Materials

Compile the following materials:
1. Letter of application that addresses all aspects of your qualifications including:
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching, especially first-year students
  • Relevant research and teaching related to courses
  • Example of how you would teach at a text or topic from at least two courses in our curriculum.
  • Intellectual flexibility
  • Experience with team-teaching (recommended)
    2. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion statement: Applicants should provide evidence of experience with and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through teaching and mentoring.
    3. Current curriculum vitae.
    4. Summary of student, peer and/or other teaching evaluations from your most recent course taught: 5-page maximum. Do not submit individual student forms or letters from individual students.
    5. Two letters of recommendation. At least one letter should speak to your teaching.

Step Three: Online Submission of Application Materials and Information

Once all required documents have been gathered, process your application through Interfolio. To submit your application, use this link: http://apply.interfolio.com/81824
    1. Complete profile and enter requested information about cluster preferences:
    o. Demographic Profile: including degree granting institution, and date of Ph.D.,
which must have been earned no earlier than 2015). Applications will be considered incomplete if the Demographic Profile is missing information.
    o. Identify one course cluster.
  • Fulfill all document requirements. You will be able to add additional materials later.
  • Save and submit your application.

Final deadline for submitting your completed application is February 16, 2021, 11:59pm EST (Interfolio closes the system on Eastern Time).

If you choose to withdraw, or if you have any additional concerns, please contact. Please note: Stanford will close for winter break on Friday, Dec 11, re-opening on Monday, Jan 4, so we will not be available to answer any questions during this time.
