Accountabilities:
We are seeking a creative and collaborative Instructional Designer to join our team. The ideal candidate will be passionate about creating engaging and effective learning experiences and will thrive in a team-oriented environment. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of teaching, learning & technology, and to advocate for digital accessibility.
The individual in this position will be accountable for developing, implementing, and assessing projects and programs related to the thoughtful and innovative use of digital technologies to support teaching, learning and research in a residential liberal arts setting. This position is also accountable for serving a central role in supporting the application of universal design for learning (UDL) principles in support of inclusive pedagogical approaches and guiding the learner-centered use of accessible technology tools. In addition, this role serves as a technical and pedagogical expert in the use of supported learning platforms, including course management technology (e.g., Moodle), web-based collaborative tools, and interactive classroom technologies. The position works in close collaboration with key partners within ITS, the Center for Learning, Teaching and Research, and the Office of Disability Support Services to ensure the alignment of resources and needs.

Specific accountabilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Participate in the conception, development and implementation of new initiatives supporting the University's and ITS department's strategic mission and plan for diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Assist in the identification, implementation, and use of accessible technology tools (including enhancement of existing technologies), and related pedagogical resources to support learning.
  • Serve as a primary point of support for the instructional use of Moodle and provide guidance on enhancing the accessibility of course sites.
  • Collaboratively design and facilitate learning opportunities / programs for faculty and students focused on the effective use of digital technologies, including the application of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles.
  • Develop instructional materials and support resources for meaningful use of digital / instructional technologies in a variety of learning contexts.
  • Engage in ongoing needs assessment that can inform educational development programming, capacity building and alignment of resources to support inclusive pedagogy.
  • Support, guide, and model incorporation of research-based best practices in learning platforms when planning learning experiences.
  • Regularly engage in outreach and consultation with faculty members to develop a grounded understanding of instructional approaches, course design challenges and support needs.
  • Manage and participate in team-based project work that involves faculty, staff, ITS colleagues, librarians, and student media consultants.
  • Build strong collaborative partnerships with colleagues in ITS, the Center for Learning, Teaching & Research (CLTR), and Disability Support Services to align resources and coordinate services. Stay abreast of current research in the general area of educational technology, and participate in relevant professional communities through attending and presenting at conferences.


Professional Experience/Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience assisting and supporting faculty use of learning management system technology (preferably Moodle), including the effective use of educational
    technology in traditional and technology-enabled learning environments.
  • Knowledge of and experience with applying Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles in course design and instructional practice in education settings.
  • Deep understanding and knowledge of teaching and learning - demonstrated teaching experience highly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of instructional design principles / practices (e.g., needs assessments, task analysis, activity design, prototyping, evaluation).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience using (accessible / assistive) technologies to support inclusive pedagogy.
  • Demonstrated ability to consult with faculty members to identify and implement technologies to assist students with diverse learning needs.
  • Experience designing and facilitating workshops / training sessions for faculty and students.
  • Five (5) or more years experience working with clients in instructional design or educational development in a university setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in project management.
  • Demonstrated Knowledge of managing a learning management system.
  • Experience designing and conducting program evaluations and/or research studies.
  • Experience participating in large initiatives across an entire organization through consultation, facilitation, and training.


Education
Masters degree in a relevant field (including but not limited to education, instructional design, educational technology) OR a bachelors degree with an equivalent combination of relevant professional experience.

Work Schedule:
Monday-Friday.Normal schedule is weekdays coinciding with the operating hours of Colgate University. This position will be required to work on campus, with occasional remote work in accordance to the University policy.
