Description
As an employee of Hobart and William Smith Colleges, the Instructional Technologist for Data Science promotes technology integration in the curriculum and supports the exploration of emerging learning technologies. This position partners with HWS faculty members to explore and evaluate innovative ways to use data-related technology and new pedagogies to support learning environments where students can succeed. This role resides within the Digital Learning Team, which is a part of the Learning Commons, a collaborative, cross-organizational venture between the Library, Center for Teaching and Learning, and IT Services. This team member will be expected to assess instructional and learning needs, design and recommend technology solutions, develop faculty and student support materials, implement instructional strategies to achieve learning goals, and practice continuous improvement. The individual will have direct input to and impact on classroom learning. An experienced learning and technology background and some classroom teaching experience will qualify a successful applicant for this position.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Participate in curriculum development, student performance, and technology selection discussions at course, program, and institutional levels.
  • Advise, support, and assist with the use of data science tools (RStudio, POSITCLoud, Stata, ArcPro, ArcOnline, PowerBI etc.) that lead to the achievement of learning outcomes.
  • Design, recommend, implement, and evaluate the use of data science tools as a demonstration of learning in student projects.
  • Provide direction on RStudio (POSITCloud, Server, Connect), Python (Jupyter Notebooks/ Anaconda), Stata, ArcPro, ArcOnline, PowerBI etc.
  • Design, develop, deliver, and evaluate faculty and student development opportunities related to the use of data analysis tools, but not limited to, RStudio (POSITCloud, Server, Connect), Python (Jupyter Notebooks/ Anaconda), Stata, ArcPro, ArcOnline, PowerBI etc.
  • Use and configure commercial and open-source data analysis tools such as, but not limited to, RStudio, POSITCloud, Stata, ArcPro, ArcOnline, Anaconda, PowerBI, etc.

Additional Responsibilities:
  • Provide assistance to faculty to develop the methodologies and strategies for improving student learning outcomes; involves supporting courses through the use of instructional design pedagogy and education technologies; this occurs at both the course-level and through stewardship of institution-wide initiatives.
  • Create and maintain learning objects and modules in support of technology-integrated teaching and learning.
  • Articulate, demonstrate, and apply best practices in the use of digital resources for teaching, learning, and scholarship.
  • Develop and deliver programs, training, workshops, and resources, which promote the effective use of digital tools for teaching and learning with both students and faculty.
  • Provide leadership, programmatic collaboration, and instructional design in areas of specialization and skill (see below).
  • Assist in the discovery, administration, and delivery of educational technologies; ability to learn new systems quickly and efficiently; interest in and desire to teach others about them.
  • Collaborate and partner with a diverse constituency: subject matter experts, faculty, students and staff; ability to advise, recommend, implement, and assess strategies that lead to the achievement of curricular objectives.
  • Provide expert hours and drop-in support for curricular technology needs.
  • As a campus leader and facilitator of innovation, represent IT Services on campus committees, working groups, and academic department planning conversations.
  • Collaborate with Learning Commons colleagues to fulfill educational needs and curricular goals.
  • Document service and solutions within the ticketing and incident management systems while demonstrating ITIL-based service management.

Other Responsibilities
  • Participates in cross-functional projects at a departmental level.
  • Represents Colleges and the department as a principal contact for community members, vendors, contractors, and the public.
  • Strengthen digital literacy skills through education and the application of digital technologies to effectively engage in information gathering, utilization, and data management while promoting a security culture.
  • Must complete all required federal, state, institutional, and department training.
  • Engages in a planned professional development program and maintains skills and knowledge relative to the position and technology industry, including best practices, evolving operational requirements, and industry trends.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to unique social, cultural, and economic circumstances.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the Colleges' educational philosophy and mission.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Other Information:

This is a full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible administrative position. Work hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. during the academic year, with a possible shortened workweek during the scheduled summer hours period. Some on-call, weekend, and evening hours may be necessary. The position will be located in Geneva, NY., with the option for partially remote work. This position description is not all-inclusive as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned. Salary range: $58,550 - $70,000.


Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree required, Masters degree preferred in education, geography (GIS), data analytics, computer/information science, math/statistics, sociology, psychology, natural sciences, economics, management/entrepreneurship - or training-related field and/or a certificate in Data Analytics from an accredited program
  • 1 - 3 years of professional experience with educational technology tools
  • Experience as classroom teacher or trainer
  • Demonstrable ability to write and interpret code in at least one programming language widely used in academic research, such as R or Python
  • Demonstrated experience in written and interpersonal communication skills to facilitate meetings, write status reports, develop project plans, and generate cost estimates.
  • Strong project management orientation.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Experience providing technical support to users of learning management, data management, or content management system, or to users of specialized software applications.
  • Experience developing curriculum, training materials, or technical documentation.
