Part-time Academic Strategist/Tutor/Learning Assistant FY - 2024



Job Description

CAS Academic Strategists assist students who utilize tutoring services in building their academic confidence. Strategists conduct weekly, one-on-one sessions with their assigned students to work on study skills, confidence building, and creating action plans to address academic challenges. Academic Strategists work with Centers for Academic Success staff to foster independent learning for CSN students. Other responsibilities include:
  • Guide students through self-assessments, skills-building, and confidence-building exercises.
  • Maintain documentation for each assigned student.
  • Customize a plan, with supervisor support, for each assigned student's needs in keeping with program outcomes.
  • Implement assessment tools.
  • Demonstrate a reliable and positive work ethic.
  • Effectively receive and apply feedback and work in a team setting with staff and peers.
  • Model successful student habits and campus involvement in student interactions.
  • Participate in pre-semester training, ongoing training, and staff meetings.
  • Staff the Learning Commons Desk when needed.
  • Maintain detailed knowledge of services & programs at CSN and develop relationships with other departments to facilitate successful referrals.

Qualifications of Applicants:
  • Minimum of 1 semester experience working in an academic setting, preferably in a role supporting student success.
  • Minimum of 24 hours of undergraduate work, with an earned overall college grade point average of at least 3.0. Transcripts must be submitted.
  • Demonstrate good communication and interpersonal skills, along with the ability to work with students from varied backgrounds and skill levels during interview.
  • Demonstrate non-judgmental listening skills during interview.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of effective study skills and strategies during interview.
  • Provide a recommendation from a member of CSN faculty or staff.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Students pursuing or intending to pursue, degrees in the following disciplines: psychology, education, social work, counseling.
  • Successful completion of general education requirements.
  • Previous experience in learning support.
